What is Molarity

Molarity is a measure of the concentration of a solution, defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved per cubic decimeter (dm³) or liter of solution. For example, to prepare a 1 molar (1 M) solution of glucose, you dissolve 180 grams of glucose (its molar mass) in enough water to make the total volume exactly 1 dm³. Similarly, for a 1 M solution of sucrose, 342 grams of sucrose are used. Since different solutes occupy different volumes, the amount of water added varies, but the final volume must always be 1 dm³. The molarity of a solution can be calculated using this molarity formula:

Molarity ( M ) = Mass of Solute ( g ) / Molar mass ( g/mol ) × Volume of Solution ( dm³ )

As ratio of mass to molar mass is equal to number of moles,

m/M = n

hence the Molarity formula can also be written as

Molarity ( M ) = Number of Moles / Volume of Solution ( dm³ )

Units of Molarity

Molarity (M) is expressed in moles per cubic decimeter (mol/dm³) or simply mol/L, since 1 dm³ = 1 liter.
